What is anemia?

Anemia is one of the most common diseases prevailing. Women and children are most susceptible to it. Women with chronic diseases have a higher risk of anemia . Anemia is condition when the hemoglobin count of the body is less than 13.5gms/100ml in men and less than 12gm/100ml in females.
This condition occurs when your body lacks healthy red blood cell. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the organs and tissues, which keep them healthy and in good working condition.

Anemia can be due to

1. Decrease in the production of RBC’s
2. Increased destruction of RBC’s.
3. Abnormal or faulty production of red blood cells
4. Due to blood loss

Anemia Caused by Blood Loss

Red blood cells can be lost through bleeding, which can occur slowly over a long period of time, and can often go undetected. This kind of chronic bleeding commonly results from the following:
• Gastrointestinal conditions such as ulcers, hemorrhoids, gastritis(inflammation of the stomach), and cancer
• Prolonged Use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such aspirin, ibuprofen, which can cause ulcers and gastritis.
• Menstruation and childbirth in women, especially if menstrual bleeding is excessive and if there are multiple pregnancies

Anemia Caused by Decreased or Faulty Red Blood Cell Production

With this type of anemia, the body may produce too few blood cells. In either case, anemia can result. Red blood cells may be decreased due to abnormal red blood cells or a lack of minerals and vitamins needed for red blood cells to work properly. Conditions associated with these causes of anemia include the following:

• Iron-deficiency anemia
• Vitamin deficiency
• Bone marrow and stem cell problems
• Other health conditions
• Sickle cell anemia

Patients who suffer from anemia feel the following symptoms-Tiredness, fatigue, pale skin, lack of concentration, short of breath, head ache or heaviness in the head region, feeling of heart racing and or worsening of heart problems.

Anemia can be detected by a simple blood test known as the complete blood count test.

Treatment for anemia depends on the type, cause, and severity of the condition. Treatments may include dietary changes or supplements, medicines, procedures, or surgery to treat blood loss.

Goals of Treatment
The goal of treatment is to increase the amount of oxygen that the blood carries . This is done by raising the red blood cell count and increasing hemoglobin level.

Another goal is to treat the underlying cause of the anemia.

TREATMENT MODALITY 1: Dietary Changes and Supplements Low levels of vitamins or iron in the body can cause some types of anemia. These low levels might be the result of
1. Poor diet
2. Certain diseases or conditions that interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals.

To raise vitamin or iron level, it is advised to take a diet especially catering to anemic body needs and include vitamin or iron supplements. Common vitamin supplements are vitamin B12 and folic acid (foliate). Vitamin C sometimes is given to help the body absorb iron. supplements should be taken under doctors supervision .

Medicines are prescribed to facilitate in more production red blood cells your body or to treat an underlying cause of anemia. Some of these medicines may include:
• Antibiotics to treat any infections which could be an underlying cause of anemia .
• Hormones to treat heavy menstrual bleeding in teenaged and adult women.
• A man-made version of erythropoietin to stimulate your body to make more red blood cells. Under strict supervision of your physician .
• Medicines to prevent the body’s immune system from destroying its own red
blood cells.

folic acid

TREATMENT MODALITY 3: Blood Transfusion

It is safe and common procedure which is carried on routinely in hospital. The blood is transfused in to the patient via intravenous (iv) route. A careful matching of the donor blood with the recipients blood is mandatory .

TREATMENT MODALIRTY 4: Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplant

A blood and marrow stem cell transplant replaces your faulty stem cells with healthy ones from another person (a donor). During the transplant, which is like a blood transfusion, one gets donated stem cells through a tube placed in a vein in your chest. Once the stem cells are in the body, they travel to the bone marrow and begin making new blood cells.

Treatment modality 5: Surgery

In case of a life-threatening situation due to bleeding, may require surgery.
Situations like Continuous bleeding due to a stomach ulcer or colon cancer.
In case of high rate of destruction of red blood cells, the spleen may have to be removed. The spleen is an organ that removes worn-out red blood cells or helps in the destruction of faulty or old blood cell which arte no longer required by the body. An enlarged spleen may remove more red blood cells than normal, causing anemia. The onset of anemia is un symptomatic and anemia may lead to very drastic changes in the body resulting in chronic consequences. It is advised to have proper balanced meal and exercise regularly.

Always get routine blood check up for preventive health care approaches. This will guide the doctor to understand your health condition better and identify the underlying cause accurately and enable him to prescribe the right treatment for your condition .Primus Preventive Health Check – for enabling you to have secure and disease free future
