Hepatitis B is a potentially life-threatening liver infection causing irritation and swelling (inflammation) of the liver due to infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Hepatitis B infection can be spread through having contact with the blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and other body fluids of someone who already has a hepatitis B infection. The hepatitis B virus can also be passed to an infant during childbirth if the mother is infected. When a person first gets hepatitis B, they are said to have an ‘acute’ infection. Most people are able to eliminate the virus and are cured of the infection. Some are not able to clear the virus and have ‘chronic’ infection with hepatitis B that is usually life-long.

The acute illness causes liver inflammation, vomiting, jaundice and, rarely, death. Chronic hepatitis B may eventually cause cirrhosis and liver cancer—a disease with poor response to all but a few current therapies There is no specific treatment for acute hepatitis B. Care is aimed at maintaining comfort and adequate nutritional balance, including replacement of fluids that are lost from vomiting and diarrhoea. Some people with chronic hepatitis B can be treated with drugs,Liver transplantation is used to treat severe, chronic hepatitis B liver disease.
