The clear and transparent human crystalline lens is a part of focusing mechanism of the eye. With increasing age, proteins in the lens begin to break down and the lens becomes cloudy and opaque thereby hampering the normal vision called as cataract or “Safed Motia”. It is the most common cause of blindness worldwide and is conventionally treated with surgery.

Several factors can promote the formation of cataracts, including long-term exposure to ultraviolet light, exposure to ionizing radiation, secondary effects of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and advanced age, genetic reasons or trauma

Symptoms of cataract-
Hazy, fuzzy and blurred vision
Double vision
Increased sensitivity to light
Poor night vision
Rapid need to change eye glass prescription in early stage
The only treatment for a cataract is surgery to remove it. Surgery is done if you cannot perform normal activities, such as driving, reading, or looking at computer or video screens, even with glasses.

About half the population by the age of 60 will get cataract, while around 80 percent people will have cataract in at atleast one eye by the age of 70 years
